Exploring the influences and inspiration of Bernat Klein through contemporary practice
Supported by Creative Scotland, our new project will run from January 2023 to January 2024.
As a catalyst in creative thinking and new ideas, the Bernat Klein Foundation is leading a Scotland-wide series of exhibitions, talks and workshops that will inspire, inform, and connect contemporary practice in the visual arts, design and architecture.
The project will engage audiences in the story of Bernat Klein, a Serbian born designer and emigre to the UK in the post-war period, and whose career based in the Scottish Borders spanned six decades.
As a true polymath, he gained international success in the interrelated spheres of fine art, fashion, textile design, architecture, industrial design, and colour consultancy. And as an innovator, Bernat Klein collaborated with modernist architect, Peter Womersley in the design of his house High Sunderland (1957) and Studio (1972).
In the centenary year of Klein’s birth, the project creates new perspectives that shape and influence the discussion of both Klein and Womersley’s substantial contribution to twentieth-century design and architecture, which continues to inform and inspire current practice across the visual arts, design and architecture.
